What are perfume notes?

Notes are the individual scents that make up a fragrance, such as bergamot, rose, vanilla or oud. They evaporate at different speeds, so a perfume changes over time. Perfumers arrange them in three layers, often called the fragrance pyramid.

Top notes: the first impression

Top notes are what you smell in the first 5 to 15 minutes. They are light, bright and evaporate quickly. Common top notes include citrus (bergamot, lemon, grapefruit), fruits (pear, pineapple, berries) and fresh herbs (mint, lavender).

Heart notes: the character

Base notes: the lasting memory
